Kitesurfing in Campione del Garda: Wind, Freedom and History

Where it all begin

Kitesurfing in Campione del Garda is not just a sport — it’s part of the village’s identity.

It all started in the late 1990s, when Gigi Olzi, an entrepreneur and passionate sailor, brought the first kite to the waters of Lake Garda.

In 1998, with his school 10 DR Tender, he introduced this revolutionary sport to Campione, turning it into one of the very first kitesurfing spots in Italy.

Thanks to his pioneering spirit, Campione del Garda quickly became a European reference point for riders and wind lovers.

Gigi Olzi didn’t just introduce a new sport — he created a community bound by passion, respect for the wind, and a love for nature.

His vision laid the foundation for what is now one of the most iconic kitesurfing destinations in Europe.

From the first kites to today’s schools

Over the years, kitesurfing has grown to become part of Campione’s soul.

The creation of ASD Kitecampione, a non-profit sports association promoting safety and environmental respect, helped establish Campione as Italy’s capital of kitesurfing.

The association still manages the only beach on Lake Garda fully dedicated to kitesurfing, where both the Pelèr (morning) and the Ora (afternoon) winds can be enjoyed.

Today, kitesurfing in Campione is not just a hobby — it’s a culture.

Renowned schools like Garda Kitesurf, Reunion Kite Academy, and ASD Kitecampione offer lessons for beginners and advanced riders alike, with on-water support, equipped areas, live webcams, and an international, friendly atmosphere.

Why Campione del Garda is unique

 • The only beach on Lake Garda where both the Pelèr and Ora winds can be used.

 • Among the most consistent wind conditions in Europe, making it ideal for all levels.

 • A spectacular natural setting between lake, mountains and the San Michele canyon.

 • A welcoming international kite community deeply tied to the spirit of freedom.

A legacy that continues

From that first kite launched by Gigi Olzi, Campione del Garda has built a story of wind, courage and freedom.

Every kitesurfer who enters the water today carries on that same passion — the belief that the wind connects us to something greater.

Campione del Garda is more than a place: it’s where the spirit of kitesurfing lives on.
